The Reality of Digitisation in Ecuador
Let us speak honestly: Ecuador does not lead Latin America's digital transformation rankings. But that does not mean we are standing still.
Over the past three years, I have seen significant changes in Ecuadorian business thinking. The pandemic accelerated what would otherwise have taken a decade.
Where We Stand: The Data
According to CAF's Digital Economy and Society Index (2023):
- Connectivity: 76% of urban households have internet, but only 38% in rural areas
- Digital human capital: Still below the regional average
- Business internet use: 85% of businesses have a basic online presence
The reality for SMEs:
- 60% use social media to sell
- 35% have a working website
- 15% have implemented a CRM
- 5% use automation tools
The 3 Profiles of Ecuadorian SMEs
The Digital Sceptic
"That is for large businesses; we are too small."
They use WhatsApp for everything. Excel for accounting. Paper for orders.
Opportunity: Digital tool costs have fallen dramatically. What cost $500/month 5 years ago costs $50 today.
The Disorganised Enthusiast
"We have a CRM, a website, social media and email marketing, but nothing talks to anything else."
They buy tools without a strategy. Every salesperson uses whatever they prefer.
Opportunity: Consolidating and integrating can deliver better results than adding more tools.
The Digital Strategist
"We choose tools based on our processes and measurable objectives."
A minority today, but growing quickly.
Opportunity: Scale what works, explore AI and advanced automation.
The Ecuadorian Market's Unique Opportunities
1. Competitors Are Still Asleep
In many sectors, even basic digitisation sets you apart. The bar is low.
2. Emerging Tech Talent
Ecuadorian universities are graduating digital professionals. More and more choose to stay.
3. A Growing Startup Ecosystem
Quito and Guayaquil have active entrepreneurship hubs. Local solutions understand the local context.
4. Government Progress
Mandatory electronic invoicing, electronic signatures and a business one-stop shop. The regulatory framework is driving digitisation.
The Real Challenges
1. Uneven Connectivity
Outside the main cities, internet access remains a problem.
2. A Preference for Face-to-Face Contact
"I prefer to go to the office and speak in person." This mindset persists, especially among older generations.
3. Distrust of Digital Payments
Although this is changing, many Ecuadorians still prefer cash.
4. A Lack of Local Examples
Silicon Valley success stories cannot simply be replicated here. We need more Ecuadorian stories.
My Recommendation for Ecuadorian SMEs
If you are starting out (Level 0):
- Basic presence: Google Business Profile + a simple website
- Communication: WhatsApp Business (free)
- Payments: Payment link (Paymentez, PayPhone)
If you already have a digital presence (Level 1):
- Basic CRM (HubSpot Free, Pipedrive)
- Simple automation (automatic replies, reminders)
- Metrics: Google Analytics, social media reports
If you want to lead your sector (Level 2+):
- System integration
- AI for customer service and sales
- Core process automation
- Predictive analytics
The Future Is Promising
Five years ago, talking about AI in an Ecuadorian SME sounded like science fiction. Today, businesses with 10 employees are using ChatGPT for content, chatbots for customer service and automations for operations.
Change is happening. The question is: will you lead or follow?
