Digital Support: The Value of an External Consultant

The Dilemma: Internal Team or External Consultant?

It is a question I hear constantly. And the answer, as with almost everything in business, is: it depends.

But after 15 years in consulting, I have a clear perspective on when each option makes more sense.

The Advantages of an External Consultant

1. A Fresh Perspective

When you work inside a business, you develop blind spots. An external consultant sees what you no longer notice.

I have entered businesses where obvious problems had remained unresolved for years. Not because people were foolish, but because they were too close to see them.

2. Experience Across Businesses

A consultant works with dozens of businesses. They recognise patterns and have seen what works and what does not.

An internal team, by definition, knows only its own business.

3. Flexible Capacity

Transformation projects have peaks and troughs. With a consultant, you scale according to need.

An internal team has a fixed cost, whether or not you use that capacity.

4. Independence from Internal Politics

A consultant has no internal agenda. They can state uncomfortable truths that an employee might avoid.

When to Hire a Consultant

✅ Projects with a defined start and end ✅ You need expertise that you will not use continuously ✅ You need an objective external perspective ✅ You lack the time to develop the knowledge internally

When an Internal Team Is Better

✅ Technology is core to your business ✅ You need 24/7 availability ✅ The knowledge must remain permanently within the business ✅ You have enough volume to justify fixed costs

The Hybrid Model

What works best for SMEs: a small internal team + an external consultant for specific projects and strategic support.

Typical setup:

  • 1–2 internal people for daily operations
  • A consultant for strategy and special projects

The Value of Ongoing Support

There is a difference between a one-off project and ongoing support.

A project solves a specific problem. Ongoing support builds capability.

A good consultant does more than solve your current problems. They teach you to solve future ones.

At KBASESORIAS, we offer both models. Let's discuss which best fits your situation.
